Renovated colonial-style Prospect home is classic with a modern twist

Robert and Susan Borgerding had been looking at houses for a while, but when they discovered their family would be growing, they knew they had to start browsing bigger places.

“After we found out we were expecting our second child, we knew we needed something (larger),” Susan told The Courier Journal. “We really got looking, (then) we fell in love with (this) neighborhood and the house.”

The 3,200-square-foot colonial-style home in the Prospect neighborhood of Bridgepoint seemed like it would suit their needs — for the most part.

“We knew the layout didn’t quite work out for us,” Susan explained, “but we went ahead and bought the house, (knowing) from the get-go that we were going to remodel.”

The couple enlisted the help of Bailey Remodeling, then temporarily moved into an apartment while their new house underwent major changes.

Open and airy

Susan says the most important part of updating the home’s layout was making it more open.

“In the evenings after work,” she explained, “(I like) to have my whole family in the same space.”

Multiple walls between the kitchen and family room were removed, as was a bathroom that was set near the middle of the first floor. The Borgerdings also moved the laundry room — which was previously located near the lower-level bathroom — to a space just off the garage, which is connected to a new mudroom.

Upstairs, they got rid of an office that was attached to the main bedroom, utilizing the space to make the bathroom bigger and add a second walk-in closet.

Everything in the remodeled space — from the new chandelier at the top of the staircase to the wallpaper on the ceiling of the first-floor powder room — was picked out by Susan herself.

“(My style is) very clean with kind of a modern twist,” she said. “(I like) lots of black and white with pops of color.”

This is evident throughout the home. In the sitting room, black, white, and shades of gray anchor the space, while pops of green are incorporated via plants, accent pillows, and an art TV.

“We pretty much started from scratch with everything,” Susan added. “It’s a very different house from the last house we lived in. We got all new furniture and are still working on (getting more) art and stuff for the walls.”

She adds that though she gravitates toward a more modern look, she likes a little bit of everything.

“If I see something I like, I try to make it work,” said. “Some of my stuff leans more traditional.”

With the fireplace, for example, she initially selected a contemporary tile to use. But when Bailey Remodeling began removing a layer of marble, they discovered there was brick underneath. Susan decided to scratch the new tile idea, opting instead to keep the brick intact and simply paint it white.

“It’s not modern, but I love it,” she exclaimed. “We just made it work.”

Favorite spaces

One of Susan’s favorite rooms in their new home is also the most-used space: the kitchen, which boasts brand-new GE Café appliances and a nine-foot-long quartz island.

“It’s where we spend most of our time,” she said. “My husband’s a chef, so he’s always cooking something. … It’s nice that we can all be together.”

The room also features Susan’s signature black-and-white modern style, with gold fixtures and chandeliers to accent the space. It opens to the dining area on one side, and a bar and sitting room on the other.

“I also love the mudroom,” she said. “It’s just so convenient, having (it) right off the kitchen and the garage.”

There is a lot to love about the Borgerdings’ remodel, which took about four months to complete. Susan adds that though their house is now exactly where they want it to be structurally, she’s continuously making interior changes.

“We love the neighborhood (and) we love the transformation that was made,” she said. “It feels like a home. We’re still designing, and decorating, and making it our own, but we are very happy where we are.”
